Job Title: Associate Conductor for the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus (Part-time)

Location: Portland, Oregon

The Portland Gay Men’s Chorus (PGMC) is seeking a highly skilled and passionate Associate Conductor to join our artistic team. The successful candidate will have experience conducting choral ensembles of various skill levels; a deep knowledge of choral repertoire and vocal pedagogy; superior rehearsal, organizational, and communication skills; appreciation for the lived experiences of all community members; and a commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Artistic Director and Conductor (ADC) as needed in planning and conducting performances
    • Attend all rehearsals and performances
    • Conduct sectionals and full rehearsals as assigned
    • Attend regular meetings with PGMC’s Artistic/Production teams
    • Coordinate and/or Conduct Community Outreach Events as needed
    • Assist with recruiting and auditioning new singers
    • Maintain open communication with the ADC and other staff/volunteers of PGMC 
  • Serve as conductor for PGMC’s small ensemble, Cascade (approximately 16 voices, mostly a cappella) 
    • Develop 1 full show (Cascade Showcase) per season 
    • Ensure the Cascade showcase aligns with the ADC’s vision for the season
    • Coordinate and lead Production team and all concert logistics for Cascade Showcase 
    • Prepare and conduct 1-2 pieces per concert with Cascade, to be performed as part of PGMC’s other mainstage concerts 
    • Prepare and coordinate outreach/community performances when needed
  • Coordinate performances and logistics for PGMC’s Artists in Schools program
    • Manage all aspects of the Artists in Schools Program, with assistance from PGMC staff/volunteers/members as needed
    • Develop and maintain positive relationships with local schools and choruses 
    • Solidify the script and procedures for the Artists in Schools program
  • Serve as an ambassador and liaison between the chorus, the LGBTQ+ community, and local arts organizations
    • Help develop and maintain positive relationships with donors and supporters

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music education OR comparable experience/degrees
  • Demonstrated experience conducting or working with a community-based chorus and with singers of various musical skills and experience
  • Knowledge of vocal technique and pedagogy
  • Familiarity with diverse choral repertoire, including classical, pop, musical theater, folk music, and vocal music of non-Western traditions
  • Basic piano proficiency (ability to play individual choral lines at sight) 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills
  • Passion for the mission and values of the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus

Preferred Skills: 

  • Moderate to advanced piano proficiency (open-score reading, improvisation, etc.)
  • Composing and arranging 
  • Exceptional administrative and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slack, etc.)

This is a part-time position, with rehearsals taking place on Sunday evenings (Cascade rehearsal) and Monday evenings (PGMC chorus rehearsal), as well as occasional weeknights and weekends throughout the year as dictated by PGMC’s performance schedule. Estimated compensation for qualified candidates is $20,000 annually.
